I recently became interested the Asian strategy game of GO and even though the set had an instruction manual I ordered two books to increase my knowledge. I just finished reading this very informative 149 page soft cover book (GO for beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto) and found it to be a good basic introduction. This book is organized into two parts with a total of eleven chapters. Part one covers (The Rules of GO) the very basic principles are explained in playing GO. The second part (Elementary tactics and strategy) deals with the many different aspects of the game. Some of these include the following: At the edge of the board, Shicho, Semeai, the death blow from within, cutting points, general strategy, the corners are important, extensions, ranks and handicaps.Even though this book is an excellent basic guide; nevertheless, a book can only take you so far without an experienced GO player to guide you to the finer points of this game. This book when combined with a hands-on experienced GO player can be an excellent basic guide.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems).
An excellent introduction to the game of "Go".Though I do think "complete beginners" can benefit from other titles before this one, after one has a grasp of the basics, this book is a wonderful introduction to the basic mechanics of the game. It is well worth your time and money, if you are just starting out and interested in learning more about the game.
This is a go classic, written by Kaoru Iwamoto, who has kind of an interesting history. He was one of the players of the famous "atomic bomb game" that took place in the outskirts of Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped. Apparently he devoted much of his later career to spreading go to the West, which is why this is one of the most well-known go books in English.Iwamoto doesn't write with the same "personality" as Toshiro Kageyama in Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go. He doesn't want to scare beginners away. However, the amount of content in this book might be a little overwhelming for the true beginner. In its slim 148 pages, Iwamoto goes from explaining the rules and basic principles of play to some fairly sophisticated examples of life-and-death problems and joseki, and then provides a complete analysis of two of his own games. Nothing too advanced, but it's kind of like taking all of Janice Kim's Learn to Play Go series and stuffing it into one little book.If you want just one book to start learning to play go, Go for Beginners would be a good choice. For more gradual book-learning, covering the same material but in much more detail and step-by-step, I would recommend Janice Kim's series as a starting point.
This is still my favorite beginner book. It's dense, and is in some ways the "first and second" book of go. Don't bother unless you're going to take your time reading it and work through the problems. Some problems are well past beginner. Stare at them for a while, then give up and learn some more by looking at the solution. And then re-read the book once after you finish it the first time. If you're that kind of person, this is your book.
The book is nice, even tho I already know the introduction of Go. It was still a good few things I didn't know. So half the book is useful in improving my playing skills and hopefully get me to a little higher playing level. This book was used by a library and probably sold to someone when it closed or book sell or something. It has every stamp and bookshelf numbering intact. But I don't mid, I actually like adding old books to my bookshelf. The shopping time was okay. Not the fast amazon shipping.Give a thumbs up to the seller. Thanks.
I read Yasunari Kawabata's "The Master of Go" a couple of months ago, and I was so thrilled by the novel and so puzzled to know what this game was about, that I bought a 13x13 goban (the only size available in my country right now) , and I ordered immediately Cho Chikun's "Go: A Complete introduction To The Game" and Iwamoto's "Go for Beginners". I started with this book, and quite soon I had to stop: it was just a little bit too much for a real beginner, and sometimes, diagrams were hard to read because the print has some minor flaws. I gave this book four stars though, because actually it IS a great book, but the problem is: it's hard to read for someone who starts from zero. So, Once I'm done with Cho Chikun's own primer, I'll go back to Iwamoto's little book. Then, I think, I'll have the muscle to follow the explanations.
Really well written for beginners. I follow along with the problems by moving pieces on the board. Makes it much more clear to me.
I'm a complete beginner and the book gives good information. It helps to have a boeard and feel the moves instead of just looking at pictures.
